THE LAST DAY TO DROP OFF PUMPKINS AND GOURDS IN THE RECYCLING BINS IS DECEMBER 6, 2024!
Perhaps you visited the chew crew along the creek bank or maybe Mack and the munch bunch watched over your reunion from the stand of knotweed on the hill, or maybe you came to cuddle at yoga. We are talking about the goats that inhabit Avalon Park during the summer. The weed warriors are ready to jump into action again with a recycling project but they need your help! The goats love to eat pumpkins (all gourds really)! To keep these out of the landfill, Avalon Borough is offering a collection site to recycle your fall decor.
A gourd is any fruit or seed that grows inside of a shell or peel, whether it be the pumpkin, squash, watermelon, or cucumber family. Gourds are very high in vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, fiber, and potassium. They also contain antioxidants that help protect the goats from free radicals that cause cancer. Gourds also help improve their blood circulation, boost immune system, aid with digestion, improve eyesight, and buffer action against stomach acidity. Gourds are a great source of nutrition for the goats and are enjoyed by most. The collection bins will be in the Avalon Park parking lot, near to the entrance. Please no painted or already rotten pumpkins. We are also able to accept cornstalks and straw bales if you want to drop those off too.
