The Borough of Avalon, located 6 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is where 4,705 residents call home (Source: 2010 Census). Just .6 square miles nestled along the banks of the Ohio River, Avalon offers many big city amenities.  Residents have access to an excellent public transportation system and is conveniently located to State Route 65 and Interstates 79 and 279.


Avalon's close proximity to Pittsburgh allows sports fans to have a variety of teams to follow from college action football and basketball to professional football, hockey and baseball.   The cultural district offers endless theater, symphony and concert possibilities throughout the year and will satisfy anyone's entertainment needs.  Avalon offers convenient local shopping and a variety of dining experiences as well as being minutes away from a number of major shopping malls.


Northgate School District keeps families involved with Friday night football games and the Homecoming Parade in the fall, various band and chorus concerts and other sports throughout the year and finally bringing the school year to a close with the spring musical.  Annual community events keep residents busy with 5K races, church festivals, boys baseball and girls softball organizations, fireworks and "dumpster" days keep the residents involved and proud of living in Avalon Borough.

2017 Borough of Avalon Paving Program 
Columbia Gas Project 
September 19, 2017

The paving project continues...... 

We ask that you please continue to be patient with road closures as we work on improving our community and infrastructure. This also will be the final leg of the Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania gas line infrastructure improvement project this summer. We thank Columbia Gas for being a partner with our 2017 paving program. 

Below are the tentative schedules for the remainder of the project. All schedules are subject to change due to weather and/or other unforeseen circumstances. 

Paving completed as of Friday, September 15 on the following streets:
    Duff Alley, North & South Birmingham Ave, California Ave, intersection at 
    Josephine Street and Center Avenue, the 700 block of Center Avenue from
    N. School Street to N. Chestnut Street, N. School from Park Avenue to Center 

Next on the schedule: 
     Week of September 18:
     Repair storm line in Center Avenue at S. Birmingham Avenue.  Once the 
     gas line work is completed at N. School Street and California Avenue, the mill
     and overlay paving will be completed.

     Week of September 25:
     1st and 2nd Alley, Cherry Alley and lower N. School Street to Frederick.
      Work will begin with milling followed by reconstruction and paving.

All paving has been completed by Shields Paving as of Friday, September 15 on the following streets:
Clive St., McKinley Terrace, Spring Alley, Fisk Avenue and Division Avenue

Draft Joint Comprehensive Plan Review
The Draft Joint Comprehensive Plan is now available for your review from August 1 through September 15.  

Visit the review page by clicking on the pinwheel to the right.  A copy of the Plan is available for your convenience.

Comments may be submitted via email and accepted until September 15.  

A public hearing will be held on September 20 at the Avalon Elementary School.
